    Beagle breed is one of the old breeds of dogs catagorized under the hound group. However no actual origin of the beagle is bsolutely known. No documentation is available on the earliest days of development. There are accounts of hound group even before the times of Romans in England. The beagle breed dogs also appear to be in the battle field as early as the reign of Edward III. At that time they also appear to be used for hare hunting. Some evidences of fox hunting in the 18th century. Previous to 1870 in the United States, the little hunting hounds of the southern states, then called Beagles, were more of the type of straight-legged Bassets or Dachshunds with weaker heads than the Bassets. However beagle breed appears to be as old as the hound group.

    Beagles are still used for hunting. They are sometimes used as a snuffer dog for the drug detection. The good intelligence is the key point of a beagle breed dog. There are news about a trained Beagle who saved the life of its master by using his mobile phone to dial an emergency number.
