What Causes Snoring?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Snoring is caused by the loss of tension in the muscles of the tongue and jaw and as a result parts of the throat and soft palate vibrate as air is inhaled through the mouth and nose.  If you sleep on your back, this causes the tongue to slide backwards, then constrict and speed up the flow of air.  The result is snoring !
To stop snoring it is better if you do not sleep on your back.  Someone who is drunk or very overweight is likely to snore (usually quite loudly) so try not to drink too much and if you are overweight, losing some weight may help with snoring.
A range of 'remedies' are now available from most chemists and even some supermarkets, which can help to reduce snoring.  An old fashioned remedy is to sleep with a hair brush in the bed so you cannot roll over onto your back !
