The operating system is regarded as the heart of any PC. Because it's the main software that makes your PC machinery work. Well according to the best of my knowledge the list of Microsoft's operating systems is
Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP and now the latest version is known as Windows Vista.

Windows 98 is available in markets but its becoming obsolete because Microsoft has stopped working on it since June 2006. WindowsMe is the millennium Edition hit the market in 2000 but it was not as successful as Win98.

Win2000 server Edition came into the market in 2000 to cover the market, because organizations needed an operating system which can help them to make user groups and control their server. So Microsoft keeps updating it from time to time with the changing needs of the market.

Windows XP, the new generation of Windows, is another product of Microsoft's Operating system family. Two service Packs have been released by Microsoft and the new Service pack is on its way to the market.

Win2003 server, the winxp, has the features of win2000 server with more advanced security features. I guess more then 2 service packs are available in the market.

Windows vista and long horn are the new generation of operating system with advanced security features. You can obtain the list of upcoming operating system from www.microsoft.com. Also I would recommend you that if you are a home user then go for Winxp because it's easy to install and use with extensive easy to use security features needed by a home user. Also there are many versions of Linux available in market. Apple Macintosh is also producing its own operating systems.
