Briefly, this novel (which was originally called "Notre-Dame" without the "hunchback") is the story of the deformed Quasimodo and his doomed love for the Gypsy dancer, Esmeralda. He tries to protect Esmeralda, who suffers at the hands of two men: Phoebus, whom she loves, and Frollo, whom she hates. However, in the end he can't save her.
