    Neil Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio in the United States. He is best known as the first man to have walked on the surface of the moon on July 20, 1969.

    Before working with NASA, Neil Armstrong has established a very successful career as a Navy Aviator. He flew more than seventy-eight missions during the Korean War. He was accepted and joined the astronaut crew at NASA in 1962.

    In July of 1969, he was named Commander of the Apollo 11 mission.  This was the mission that flew to the moon. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins all flew together to the moon on the Apollo 11 mission.  Michael Collins navigated the ship around the moon while Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong were on the moon's surface. Neil Armstrong was the first of the two men to set foot on the moon's surface.

    After the Apollo mission, Neil Armstrong taught at the University of Cincinnati. His book titled, 'First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong' was published in 2005.
