Assertive means 'having or showing a confident and forceful personality', according to the Oxford Dictionary.

It is a personality trait that you can improve by practicing new techniques to help you become more assertive. It is important to understand that being assertive doesn't necessarily mean that you need to develop an aggressive or rude nature. It is simply having the confidence to stand up for yourself in certain situations and being able to speak your feelings and opinions without fear.

You need to keep in mind that when you address someone you should be respectful in your language rather than being abrupt and rude. Moreover, you should use 'I' statements to emphasise the point you're making is what you personally think as opposed to a generalised statement, you should be specific in what you're saying as well as being direct.

If you go on for too long then you may lose sight of the point and people will become uninterested. Also, it is important that you know when to say no'. Some people are seen as pushovers because they're too scared to say no to somebody, especially if you feel they are superior. However, if it is an appropriate situation, you should not refrain from saying no.

In addition, you should have the right body language which includes standing and sitting with your back straight and with your head up, as well as looking at people when you talk. You should also take some care in your appearance and make sure you feel comfortable which will enable you to radiate confidence.

Assertive means confident, firm, forceful, forward. So if you were for example told that you need to be more assertive in your job, this could mean more confident. On the other hand if you where told to be more assertive about yourself, you would need to be more confident.
