Sea Snakes do indeed exist. They can be found around the Pacific and Indian Oceans and are more widespread in waters off Australia and Asia.
They belong to the Hydrophiidae family, whihc is a close relative of the Elapidae Family of snakes which contains the cobra.
They are usually less than a metre in size, although sometimes they can grow up to 2.5 metres.
Sea snakes are quite a docile creature and although attacks on humans have been reported, it is rare for them to attack. If confronted by a human, they are more likely just to shy away.
Which is quite lucky for humans, since their venom is 2-10 times as venomous than that of a snake who lives on land. They also do not make quick strikes, but produce a venom which immobilises their prey. They then just hang on to it and chew their way through it. So it is quite good that they are docile by nature......
