    The Kingdom of Thailand was officially known as Siam till 24th June 1939 and name was reinstated again between 1945 and 1949.

    The country is surrounded by Laos and Cambodia towards the east, the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia towards the south, and the Andaman Sea and Myanmar towards the west. The word Thai in the countries name Thailand mean "freedom" according to the Thai language and is also the name of a chief ethnic group. The capital of this country is Bangkok.  

    According to the census conducted in the year 2000 the total population of this country was 60,916,441 having an average population density of 126 per square kilometre. The census report of 2000 also stated that the total area of this country was estimated to be 514,000 square kilometres.
