How Insulin Changed Peoples Lives?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Type 1 diabetes used to be rapidly fatal, because these people have lost the insulin producing cells from their bodies, and a person needs insulin to get their cells to take up sugar.  When that can't happen, the body does its best to compensate by using other sources of energy, but there is only so long you can live like that before your system gets completely out of whack and you die.  Once a procedure to obtain insulin from animals was developed, it could be injected into diabetic people to function in place of natural insulin.   It's still not a perfect solution, and diabetics do have a lot of health risks that shorten their life expectancy somewhat, so researchers continue to search for a total cure.
