Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

T.S. Eliot (1888-1965) is often thought of as an English writer, but he was in fact American.  He moved to England in 1915 at the age of 27 and lived there until his death.
He is well remembered as a poet, with his seminal works 'The Waste Land' and 'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats' being regarded as some of his finest works.  However, he was also a playwright and critical essayist.
Prior to achieving fame as a poet and author, he worked as a schoolteacher, a bank clerk, a book reviewer and finally as a director of the publishers Faber and Faber.
Eliot was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1948.
The musical 'Cats' is based on Eliot's poetry 'The Old Possum's Book...' which has breathed new life into his works.
Among his plays, his best known titles are 'Murder in the Cathedral' and 'Sweeny Agonistes'.
