When Did Chocolate Bars First Come About?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Chocolate bars, known as candy bars in the United States, first appeared in the late 19th century. In the early 20th century, chocolate bars began to sell rapidly.

Chocolate was sold by weight and loose in small peices that were bagged when bought. Anything that was covered in chocolate, such as creams, nuts and caramels, were known as 'chocolates'. The chocolate evolved from these in the late 19th century as a way of packaging and selling chocolate more conveniently for both the buyer and the seller. However, the buyer had to pay for the packaging, meaning that this 'convenience' did not include price. It was cheaper to buy chocolate loose or in bulk.

Chocolate bars are the most common item available from vending machines, and certain brands of chocloate bars are made for nutritional supplementation purposes.

Famous chocolate manufacturers include, Nestle, Mars, Cadbury, Hershey and McVitie's. Famous bars include Aero, Milky Way, Milky Bar, Marathon (now known as Snickers) and many more.
