The Ancient city of Athens is perhaps best noted for its archeological and architectural remains.

The Acropolis, the ancient fortified citadel of the city, contains wonders such as the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Propylaia and the temple of Athena Nike most of which date back to around 400 BC. These were mostly religious or cult monuments. The theatre of Dionysus lies on the South slope along with the temples of Isis, Themis and Aphrodite.

The Agora or ancient marketplace, the arch of Hadrian dating back to the 2nd century AD erected in honour of a Roman Emperor, the sanctuaries forming part of the City Eleusinion, the Kerameikos, the library of Hadrian built by Emperor Hadrian in 131 AD, the monument of Lysikrates, the monument of Philopappos which is the tomb of Julius Antiochos Philopappos, the Pnyx and the tower of the winds are some more ancient monuments found in Athens.
