When Was Chirac Elected?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Jacques Chirac was first elected in the June of 1995 and re-elected in the year 2002. He chose to emphasize on the reduction in 'social fracture' and overall integration of France as a nation during his 1995 campaign.

In the 2002 elections, it was most certain that not much of the voting public would vote for Chirac. As opposed to being placed against Lionel Jospin, Chirac was faced with the controversial candidate Jean Marie le Pen. Thus most people ended up voting for him not because they preferred Chirac but because they stood in strong opposition of Jean Marie Le Pen. A census claims that 32% of people favor Jacques Chirac while the rest dislike him. The French President became the focus of worldwide attention in 2003 when he strongly defied the US led Iraq war.
