How Are Keyboards Notes Set Out?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

A musical keyboard consists of a set of levers arranged side by side which can be depressed and thus cause produce sounds.  In the Western musical scale, the twelve notes are laid out in such a manner wherein the lowest note is placed on the left, while the larger keys consisting of "natural" notes namely C, D, E, F, G, A, B jut forward.  These keys are white in colour and hence called white keys. They may also be called white notes. Those remaining 5 notes which are not a part of the "natural" notes are set back. These keys are black in colour; hence they are called black notes. They may also be called black keys. The pattern repeats all over again at the break of an octave.

Black note keys are always of uniform size whereas white note keys are also of uniform size. The spacing between these is also uniform. The width or the size of the natural notes C, D and E vary slightly compared to the size of the keys F, G, A and B. Hence, the arrangements of keyboard keys are designed to be user-friendly and easy to learn.
