What Are The Ingredients Of Tomato Sauce?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Most people mean by that phrase, the product otherwise known as ketchup.

In which case, it's mostly tomato puree, a litlte sugar, salt, vinegar.  This is the basic recipe, to which is usually added some mix of the following: cinnamon, allspice, onion, chile, mustard, pepper, paprika, cayenne, cassia, garlic powder, cloves and other vegetable extracts.

The word ketchup is itself Chinese, and ancient.  It meant fish sauce, with many other possible flavourings (mushrooms, anchovies, nuts).  Chinese style ketchup came to Europe in the 1600s. No one knows when tomatoes (a New World food) got added in, but by the 1830s, ketchup (catchup) as a tomato-based condiment was firmly established in the North American diet.

By tomato sauce you may instead be thinking of Mexican style salsa (made with chiles, coriander and onions) or pasta sauce (heavy on oil, basil, and typically coriander and onions)

It's estimated that about 850 million bottles of ketchup are sold, worldwife, every year.
