The Villa Comunale is the most famous and noticeable park situated in Naples, southern Italy. It was constructed in the 1780s by King Ferdinand IV, who was later called Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies. It was built on property that was reclaimed beside the beach flanked by the chief part of the city and the small port of Mergellina. The park was formerly a 'Royal Garden', especially retained for members of the royal family, but free to the mass on particular holidays like the Festival of Piedigrotta. The park was opened to the mass permanently in the year 1869, following the unification of Italy.
The park is home to the Anton Dohrn aquarium, which is a famous scientific organization that was set up in the 1870s.
