I Can't Find My Classic Saab 900's Ignition/get The Key Out. Can You Help?

Answer Question

One of the endearing quirks of the classic Saab 900 is the location of the ignition between the two front seats rather than on the steering column. And when you think of it, putting the ignition down there makes absolute sense. For what do you when you wish to move off? You turn the ignition, put it in gear then release the handbrake. [In time you eventually find that the ignition keys mysteriously ends up in your left hand (for right hand drive cars) whenever you sit in the driver's seat.]

The reason you cannot remove the keys from the ignition is because the classic Saab 900 does not have a steering lock. It locks in reverse gear instead. To remove the keys, turn the ignition one notch, put the car into reverse gear and return the key to the full off position. The keys can now be removed. If not, the locking mechanism is broken or the relay has blown.

YOU MUST HAVE THE GEAR SHIFT IN REVERSE IF IT'S A STANDARD TRANS TO UNLOCK THE KEY
