What Are Some Examples Of Norfolk Dialect?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

    An important example are the place names.  If you saw Wymondham on a map, would you guess it was pronounced "Windum"?  Or Stiffkey.  Would you imagine that's really "Stookee"?  How about Happisburgh (pronounced "Hazeburrow")?  Remember to put on your best "dumb tourist" smile when asking for directions to anywhere in Norfolk.

    Then there are the ordinary words and phrases, that a Norfolkian might try to take out of the county with them.    Here are some examples:

    Bishy Barny Bee = Ladybird.
    Get wrong off...  Get in trouble with.
    Loke = enclosed lane or alley (note, this is used slightly differently in Leicestershire, and maybe elsewhere, too).
    Lollop = go along slowly.
    Lummox = clumsy or unthinking person.
    Mauther = also variously spelled marther, morther, etc.  Any adult woman.
    On the huh or "on the hup", askew, not upright.
    Titty totty = very small
    Mardle = to gossip, else a pond.
