William Shakespeare wrote 38 plays, which have been reprinted over the centuries as individual books, as well as single volume compilations. Shakespeare also wrote 154 sonnets and a large number of other poems. Of these poems "The Rape of Lucrece" is probably the best known. It is also very possible that Shakespeare wrote other works as well, but these have probably been lost over the centuries. Some people have also questioned the authorship of Shakespeare's works, and have raised questions about the personal life of the author, as we know relatively little about him, despite his many works.
Shakespeare's plays and sonnets are canonical works of the English language and they are taught in nearly every English-language high school. At university, entire courses in literature departments are devoted to Shakespeare's plays and sonnets. The English playwright's works have also been translated into every major language and various abridged and modernized versions have been published in English as well.
