It was the Egyptians who first domesticated and epitomized the cat by making it a significant part of their rituals and customs. To the ancient Egyptians the cat was scared and was held with a lot of respect and was worshipped as a God. During the new kingdom many Egyptians tombs depicted cats as a part of their day to day lives. When the Egyptians went on hunting excursions instead of taking the dog which is typically a hunter's aid, they took the cat! Statues and pictures of the cat were placed outside the doors and gates as cats were believed to ward off evil.

The most famous goddesses of for the ancient Egyptians were Bastet and Sekhmet. Together they represented the balance in nature, while Bastet was the Goddess of fertility and worshipped as a protector of children and cats, Sekhmet was worshipped as the Goddess of war and destruction.
