When Were The Whitbread Book Awards First Launched?

    The Whitbread Books awards (now known as the Costa awards due to a sponsorship takeover by Costa Coffee in 2006) were launched in 1971.

    The Costa Book Awards is for novels which provide enjoyable reading for a wide audience and also books which have been highly praised for their high quality literature.

    The five categories for the awards are Best Novel, Best First Novel, Children's, Poetry,
    Biography.

    Winners of the Costa Book Awards include Phlip Pullman (The Amber Spyglass, 2001), Mark Haddon (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time), Ted Hughes (Birthday Letters, 1999 and Tales from Ovid, 1998), Salman Rushdie (The Moor's Last Sigh, 1996).
