Babies in hospitals can be expected to receive several different types of security. CCTV cameras and identity badges are commonly used in all maternity wards, while babies are now electronically tagged at the ankle or at the wrist to prevent mix-ups. These tags are activated if the baby is removed from the ward and passes through the security sensors. Several hospitals also specifically employ guards for maternity wards to prevent against intruders and violent spouses or relatives. Of the more advanced technologies, an audible alarm can be installed inside maternity wards that triggers when a baby is removed from a cot without the security system first being disabled. Additionally, special barcodes have been introduced in recent years that record newborn babies' fingerprints, which can then be matched to the mothers' set of fingerprints. Different hospitals employ variations on either or all of these techniques to prevent babies from being snatched.
