First of all try not to panic. Stammering is more common in boys than in girls and often runs in families. Sometimes a child who has learned to speak well may develop a stammer due to a stresful event such as new school, new baby in house or some other problem.
Try to be espcially loving towards your child and play down the stammer. Do not scold your little boy for stammering, or this may make it worse.
Try to spend some quality time with him and encourage him to relax and talk to you, about anything. This is important in terms of boosting his confidence when speaking.
Do not put him under pressure when he is talking and don't get irritated when he is struggling to speak. He needs to know he is loved, even when he is stammering.
If there is no improvement after two or three months, then perhaps it is worth talking to your doctor about a referral to a speech therapist.
