    The word Fond du Lac in French means "bottom of the lake." It is a city located in the county by the same name, at Wisconsin. The city has a total population of 43,270. It is heralded for its natural beauty and immense amount of job opportunities and recreational facilities. The city according to the US census bureau has a total area of 18.2 square miles of which 16.9 square miles is land and the rest 1.3 square miles or 7.3 per cent of the total area, is water.

    The dominant facet of the city's economy is dairy farming and the manufacture of engines, machinery, auto parts and leathery.  Towards the beginning of the 19th century, it came to be known as a "lumbering town." Ancient writers used to mention about the Fond du Lac River which is situated at the western end of Lake Superior, now known as St. Louis River.

    There is yet another Fond du Lac, which is a small town at Wisconsin. It is situated in the county by the same name, at the state of Wisconsin. According to the census reports of 2000, the town had a total population of 2,027. The overall area of the land spans to 20.9 square miles, of which 19.9 square miles is land and the rest is water. In other words, the area is 5.16% water.
