Was Sir Francis Drake Involved In A Massacre In Ireland?

Answer Question

In 1575, 600 men, women and children were massacred despite having surrendered to the English.  Francis Drake was present on Rathlin Island at the time of the incident and was in fact in charge of ships transporting John Norris' troops to the island. It was his task to prevent Scottish vessels with reinforcements from reaching Rathlin Island.
At the time Ireland was afflicted with periodic outbreaks of tribal warfare. When English troops made it ashore from force of frigates, the Scottish forces surrendered. Despite the surrender they were massacred. Although such unpleasant episodes were not uncommon in warfare of that era, it did not go down too well. Drake although in command of the escorting flotilla, did not lead the troops, but it was the English commander, John Norris, who directed the massacre.
