It isn't mentioned explicitly, though the Catholic notion of purgatory is based on several remarks in the New Testament. These are to do with the idea that you can't really be saved or rewarded until you have paid, fully, for everything you have ever done wrong, and that you can't come to a perfect understanding of yourself and God until you have suffered. You can find examples and discussion of such Biblical passages here The website also discussed some differences between Catholic and other beliefs.
Of course the word purgatory is derived from the Latin purgare, which in its own origin means pure, or to make pure. The idea of cleansing or healing the soul through suffering, pain and fire is found in many religions and is much older than Christianity, so this idea is a further basis for the doctrine.
