Which Frogs Have Transparent Skin?
Answers
Two types of rare frog have transparent skin, which is a very unusual feature for any animal. Ghost frogs, of which there are four very rare species in South Africa, have skin on their undersides that is very pale white and very thin. So thin that it is possible to see their abdominal organs and muscles underneath. The only protection on the skin are tiny hooks and this seems to be enough to enable to frog too clamber over rocks without doing itself any damage.
The other type of frog that is a bit see-through is the glass frog. Glass frogs are small, bright green tree frogs that live in the rainforests in Central and South America. They too have very thin skin on their bellies and limbs but this has not got any colour at all and their internal organs and bones are very clearly visible. Probably because they are delicate, glass frogs keep away from everything and not very much is known about them.
