A slave is defined as a person who is compelled to do forced labor for another person or for an organization where he does not have the option to refuse nor can he expect suitable remuneration in any form except possibly food and water; often slaves were mal treated and tortured.
Slavery in ancient as well as medieval times existed as an after effect of war when the prisoners of war were sold into slavery and forced to work in fields, building and construction activities or as private slaves.
The practice of slavery may have started as a means of procuring labor at cheap costs especially where the work was hard and also where a group of people found itself in a position to dominate other groups with the help of means like money, force including army and superior technology including better weaponry and other related tactics.
Slavery has been banned officially in all countries; today slavery is considered as a crime against humanity though it still exists unofficially especially in countries where there is an influx of immigrants from other countries.
