Which Club Is The Oldest - Manchester City Or Manchester United?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Manchester United football team was formed in 1878 and is therefore slightly older than Manchester City which was formed in 1880.

However neither of these clubs started out with Manchester in their titles.

Manchester City was originally called West Gorton (St.Marks) and then Ardwick FC before settling on Manchester City.

Manchester United began it's career as Newton Heath LYR, then Newton Heath FC, before becoming Manchester United in 1902.

There is an enormous rivalry between the two Manchester-based clubs, although they have been forced to get along at certain times, most notably following the Second World War.

United's ground Old Trafford was badly damaged during a Blitz in the war and for three years afterwards, United were forced to share the ground of their rivals, Manchester City who played at Maine Road.

Manchester United is more successful than Manchester City, having won the Premier/Football League 15 times, FA Cup 11 times, League Cup twice, European Cup twice, UEFA Cup Winners Cup once, Intercontinental Cup once and the European SuperCup once.

This is in comparison to City's 4 FA cups, 2 League Championship titles, 2 League cups and 1 European Cup Winners Cup.
