Is It Legal For My Landlord To Ask For 1st, Last Month, $500 Security Deposit And A $700 Pet Deposit?

When my roommates and I moved into our new place the land lord wanted first months rent, last months rent, $500 security deposit from all 3 of and and, just from me, a $700 pet security deposit (for my 2 pound chihuahua!). It is legal for him to demand all 4 of these from me? I live in MA and I've been told by a couple people that he can only ask for 3.

No it is not legal unless it is specified in the agreement. He can ask from each one of you but not from you alone. You should check it through your neighbourhood rents.
