I want to be a lawyer and be able to have time for a family. What type of lawyer is most family friendly and would pay enough to support at least a whole family

Law is a demanding mistress. You might want to look into not being a lawyer so much as a consultant. Something like contract law, or business law, where you act as legal counsel rather than being a trial lawyer.

If you go to a high ranking law school you will pay a high tuition, and be required to put in time at a large firm to pay for it. Some firms call themselves "family friendly" but I have yet to meet anyone who really works at one. If you can do it without a huge loan, your options are better. If you want to be involved in your family, you may want to choose a job that doesn't pay big bucks, like a DA's office.
