This Q just popped into my head just a second ago when I saw my little sister asleep. Can you answer it?

We do hear when we are sleeping, but unless the audio stimulus is outside of ordinary sounds our conscious expects to hear, we simply do not wake.  Studies show what we do hear while we are asleep gets incorporated into our dreams.

I think you do hear. I often hear things and incorporate it into the dream. The other night, for instance, I dreamed that I was walking through a dark area and there were bears ahead of me. I could hear them grunting as they moved.... I woke afraid, because I didn't want to walk through, and was hearing their growl- when I came to conscience, it was my guy snoring!!!!! I guess he's a bear, of sorts...
