How Do Active Pick Ups Work?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Active pickups modify the signal by using electronic circuitry. A pickup is a device that picks up mechanical vibrations and transforms them into an electric signal that can be stored. Active pickups need an electrical energy sources and they require a preamp, active EQ and active filters. They are more flattering to the frequency response curve and have the capacity to give a much higher output. They are used primarily in stringed instruments like guitars, and an electric violin.

Its merits are less magnetic pull, less noise and there is hardly any loss of treble when a guitarist uses long chords. It disadvantages are they sound different from the others and some people criticize the sound they give as sterile in  comparison to regular passive pickups like hum buckers ands single coils. Some of the famous users of active pickups are Steve Lukather, Zakk Wydde and James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett of Metallica.
