A rifle is a firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder, with a barrel that has a helical groove or pattern of grooves ("rifling") cut into the barrel walls.
A machine gun is a fully-automatic mounted or portable firearm, usually designed to fire rifle cartridges in quick succession from an ammunition belt or large-capacity magazine, typically at a rate of several hundred rounds per minute.

The rifle is primarily for long range targets. Whereas a machine gun shoots multiple rounds at varying rates, so a rifle would be one good shot at a single target, generally taken with precision and care to assure contact, and a machine gun would be a bunch of shots aimed in a general direction taking out more than one target (hopefully). There are many mechanical differences regarding the shape of the weapon and ammunition, loading techniques, it also depends on the size of the rifle and machine gun you are comparing. Both are guns by definition, they propel projectiles through a metal tube using explosives and mechanical attachments.

Actually a rifle is for firing for about 300 yards and machine guns are for longer rangers because the more bullets fired in one area the more likely they are to hit. The military uses both for different combat situations.
