What Is The Reason So Many Diets Fail?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The reason most diets fail in the end is because they are not sustainable. We gain too much weight because we eat more calories in a day than we need or can work off. When we go on a diet, we cut the calories and the weight comes off.
Once we go off the diet and eat more again, we gain the weight back.

Likewise, the day you go off a diet chances are you will eat a lot more than you did before you went on the diet. This sometimes becomes an unhealthy you syndrome for many people.

What you need to do is have a sustainable diet, or better called a new way of life. You need a food consumption and exercise plan that is permanent. This will let you live a normal life and eat normal foods in a normal way.

It is also good to remember that losing weight too fast will most likely end up going off your plan. It is best to lose one or two pounds a week, and then keep them off.

There are a lot of reasons that diets 'fail' but perhaps 'fail' isn't the best word, because many diets are unrealistic in the first place. After all, diets are a multi-million pound business, and companies want for there to be a constant market for diets. Therefore 'failed diets' can be in their interest. Also, weight is not necessarily a good indication of overall fitness, because muscle is more dense than fat. Some trainers say that a better indication is measurement.

That is not to say that all diet companies are this way - there are many who offer healthy and supportive programmes.

There is a way to get off the diet track, and that is to use a holistic approach. Consider what will improve your overall health and take small steps. Integrating exercise, more fruits and vegetables and water into your day can have a positive impact. By simply doing some nice things for yourself, it can make you feel happier, and take the emphasis off of losing weight - although it may be a by-product.

Also, I think lack of motivation plays a role.
