Mackerel which are seen during the warmer months of the year are always swimming, but this may not apply in winter, when the water holds more dissolved oxygen because it is colder, and when it is probable that they need less of it.
it is unknown how much the movements of the mackerel, from day to day, depend on drifting with the movements of the water, which are different at different depths, and how much it depends on the swimming of the mackerel themselves.
Schools of Mackerel are often seen at the surface. In the daytime they can be recognized by the appearance of the ripple they make, for this is less compact than that made either by herring or other fish. Also mackerel do not come out of the water to the surface.
Smoked, peppered Mackerel is delicious on a hot day with salads, and a chilled glass of white wine.
