And right now, with the dollar all over the place, it's even harder to calculate. Though I believe Japan is struggling too which may help you out. When I used to travel, I tried to stay at hotels that included breakfast and I usually had my big meal of the day at lunchtime since lunch is usually cheaper than dinner. Then I would be able to eat at nice restaurants and not spend quite so much money. Plus I would pick up fresh fruit at the local markets for snacks to save money for the other things. And if you drink, remember alcohol can get expensive quick! And when you are on vacation, talk to the locals (if you can) and find out where they go.
