The Carter Doctrine was a policy that was made public by the then President of the United States Jimmy Carter on the 23rd of January 1980 in response to the Former Soviet Union having invaded Afghanistan and the Iranian Revolution. Ever since the Second World War the American's had realized that the Persian Gulf and the vast reserves of Petroleum located there were of strategic importance to them. In lieu of this they formed a close relationship with Saudi Arabia. Seeing that the Soviet Union had now made its way into Afghanistan Jimmy Carter set out his policy that stressed that the United States would resort to any means necessary, including the use of military force, to make sure its hegemony in the region was maintained.
For years the Americans have kept the Monarchy in Saudi Arabia in power to support this aim.
