Who Was The First Team To Enter The Premiership?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

There was no first team to enter the Premiership as such, as all surviving members of the last first division season, all gained entry automatically.

Technically the first team to enter the premiership, would have been the first team to gain promotion from the old second division, into the newly formed Premier league.

The last season of the old second division was in the nineteen ninety one ninety two season when Ipswich Town were crowned champions of the division, winning the title by four points from second placed Middlesbrough.

This means that by right of winning the old second division, before the change in format for the restructuring of the league system in time for the ninetten ninety two, ninety three season (the first season of the Premier league), the first team to gain entry to it were Ipswich Town.

On the flip side you could argue that by winning the last first division championship before the restructure, Leeds United were the first team to qualify for the new Premiership as champions.
