Place the compass on the map with one edge or engraved line along your route. With the compass on the map, turn the dial on the compass until the lines engraved in it are parallel with the vertical grid lines on the map. North on the dial will then point to North on the map.
Remove the compass from the map, hold it flat and turn it so that the red needle end points to North on the map. Do not change the dial setting.
Now, just follow the direction of travel arrow and you will be on course. Remember to check at regular intervals as it can be easy to deviate if you are dodging around obstacles or trying to find somewhere suitable to cross a river,
The four Golden rules for map reading are:
* know exactly where you started from
* always check direction on moving off and whenever you change direction
* remember the scale
* read ahead to anticipate problems with the terrain and diversion you may need to take to avoid an obstacle or hazard
