Lean refers to a system that is run on the very basics at high efficiency with very little or no waste. This would refer to all factors of production from employees to use of product needed for the production cycle. As such lean is so to speak mean, which means that something that is hungry for more will not waste but utilize every and all factors to consume and utilize everything at it's availability.
