How Many Different Moves Does A Player Have The Choice Of At The Start Of A Game Of Chess?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

I think there's 20 because at the beginning of a game all your pawns can move 1 square ahead or two. So that's 16. The 2 knights can jump over the pawns and have the choice of 2 squares. Each knight can move to 2 places at the beginning. 2 knights X 2 squares = 4 places to move.

    So 16 + 4 = 20
