Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The term caliber or calibre assigns the interior diameter of a tube or it can also be referred as the exterior diameter of a wire or rod. It comes from the Italian word 'calibro', which itself is again derived from the Arabic quâlib meaning mold.

In rifle, the caliber is the diameter of the inside ring of the barrel. In a rifled barrel the space is measured between the lands.

The term materialize with respect to firearms and is the measurement of the inside diameter of the barrel.

Small arms vary in bore size from just about .17 cal. up to .50 cal. Arms used to hunt big, can be as large as .80 caliber. The muskets and muzzle-loading rifles in the 19th century were .58 calibers. (4.5mm)or .177 calibre is the smallest size of pellets extensively used in air guns, and is the only caliber usually accepted for formal target contest.

The answer states "In a rifled barrel the space is measured between the lands." That statement is true in most countries outside the USA where the measurements are between the grooves. (Refer to the discussion on this subject in Wikipedia)
