Experts say that the people who will benefit most from counselling or therapy are those who are strongly motivated to change their situation. The person centred approach to therapy is typical of many modern forms of therapy. It requires a relationship of honesty and trust between client and therapist or counsellor. It is based on the client expressing their thoughts and feelings and the therapist saying very little but asking questions occasionally to help reveal thoughts and emotions that the client might have difficulty acknowledging on their own or with others. Although the client has to be prepared to talk honestly about his/her feelings this does not have to be done in any particular way. A few simple words can sometimes express deeply held ideas and concerns more adequately than the most complicated written essay. If you are willing to try and get in touch with your feelings and to share responsibility with the therapist for the work you do together then person centred therapy is worth considering.
