I thought plants shed their leaves in the fall, if they are shedding leaves in the summer they may be dehydrated and need water maybe some extra plant food and treatment or check the p.h. Levels in the soil.

A healthy plant wouldn't shed its leaves in summer. Descidious plants (plants that do shed their leaves) would normally lose them in Autumn ('The Fall'), in preperation for Winter. This is done for various reasons:

Firstly they don't serve much purpose. Normally they are used for absorbing the suns light energy for photosyntheis. In winter, the sun isn't strong enough. In addition to this, the frost and cold would damage the leaves, meaning they probably wouldn't be able to the job anyway. So rather invest energy in mainting them, they lose them.

Also in winter, the climate has the effect of drying out leaves. This means the plant would actually lose water if the leaves were still healthy in winter.

Shedding is the plants way of giving the plant more room to grow. They do this much like the animals do.
