I also have a sears kenmore sewing machine, the model # is located on the bottom part of the sewing machine. You have to lift the machine out of the cabinet. My Model is #158.1301 the other number 5186 is the number for the motor. I hope this helps! Good Luck!

It may be very difficult to find an owner's manual but I have these two pieces of information for you: 1) Some Kenmore models have sub model numbers and no directory seems to exist which references a model number series including the number 5186. They have other types of number series. If you can look thoroughly at the machine like on the bottom plate you may find secondary identifiers for the model. This is the weakest link :)

      2) A very nice seeming lady is currently selling her mother's model 5186 on ebay and publishes her phone number for help with the machine. Here is the link.

I'm also looking for a manual for a Kenmore 5186. I will settle for a little info. If anyone has a manual, I would be happy to pay for copies. I learned how to sew on my mom's machine back in the 70's. I inherited the same machine when my mom passed a few months ago. Now I am trying to teach my daughter how to sew on it and I can't remember some of the switch/button purposes. My problem at the moment is the machine is doing 3-4 straight stitches, then jogs for one zig zag, then back to straight. For the life of me, I can't remember how to switch this back to only straight stitches. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

#5186 is the motor number, you will have to lift the sewing machine to get the model # my sewing machine # is 158.1301 so you might have a series of numbers like that. Good Luck!
