Iridology is a means of diagnosing illness, through looking at the iris (part of the eye). It is an alterntive medicine and is sometimes used by some, but by no means all, herbalists.
The iris is divided into sections and into 6 zones. Through looking at these sections and zones, an iridologist is able to ascertain if something is wrong in the patient's body.
It was first developed by a Hungarian doctor, Ignatz von Peczely (1826-1911) who first wrote about illness being seen in the eye as early as 1881.
Whilst it may seem a little unconventional, doctors often find that the general appearance of the eye can give some indication of a patient's state of health. Consequently, many doctors do not regard iridology as dangerous, but theere is some concern that it is not based on scientific proof and therefore serious underlying conditions may go un-noticed.
