Which Of His Own Novels Did Trollope Think The Best?

Answer Question

He preferred "The Last Chronicle of Barset," written in 1867. This novel concludes his hugely popular series chronicling the in-fighting of the clergy in the imaginary cathedral city of Barchester. It centres on the Rev Josiah Crawley, a curate who is wrongly accused of fraudulently acquiring and using a cheque for £20 (a substantial sum for a curate at the time.) While he is awaiting trial, Mrs Proudie, the bishop's domineering wife, assumes his guilt and tries to get him dismissed from his post. Eventually Crawley's innocence is established by Dean Arabin and his wife, who return from abroad to explain how the confusion arose. After this Crawley receives a better post and his daughter is allowed to marry the Archdeacon's son.
A sub-plot concerns Johnny Eames, who goes to London and (temporarily) forgets his beloved Lily Dale; and some key characters from the earlier novels die, notably the "warden" Mr Harding, and the formidable Mrs Proudie.
