The 1980s is referred to as the 'Golden Age of Rap'. The decade witnessed a huge wave of commercialized rap music. This in turn brought the music style success and international popularity. Rap music at this point in time, transcended its original demographic arena and filtered into the suburbs. Rap music at this time maintained its original fan following within the ghetto and went on to attract the interest of the mainstream music enthusiasts. This decade also witnessed the emergence of what we know today as the 'old school hip hop' talent. The artists then included Run DMC, LL Cool J and Public Enemy.

Historians began to identify with the changes within the style and referred to the 80s as the 'Golden' age of rap. Rap at this stage was more commercially driven. It centered mainly around light hearted topics. The 'Golden' age saw the emergence of talents such as N.W.A., Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy E, Ice-T, MC Ren, Bone Thugs and Harmony and The Game.

If you ever read the book "The Origin of Rap Music", you would know that Rap Music was no longer the term for the music after about 1985.  Thanks to a movie called "Wild Style" and A book called "Rap Attack" Rap Music became "hip-hop".  As the book "The Origin of Rap Music" states "Rap Music" was only called such from 1979 until about 1985, after that, thanks to magazine writers and KRS-1 in 1987, it became the music known as "hip-hop".   Therefore, the Golden Age of Rap would have to be from 1979 - 1982, actually.  After that came "Wild Style" and "Rap Attack"" with their "Hip-hop" -  a re-writing of African American history by changing the name and origin.  In understanding this, from reading the book "The Origin of Rap Music", you would know that the Golden Age of Rap or those from the "Old School" of Rap (!979) could only be - Sugar Hill Gang, King Tim III, Furious 5 plus Flash, Crash Crew, Funky 4 plus One More, Disco Four, Treacherous 3, Spoony G, Super Rhymes, Fearless Four, Trickeration, Soul Sonic Force, ect.  All after 1982 were not Rap, it was what they changed it to - Hip-hop.
