Why Is "Idiot" Considered An Offensive Term By Blurtit Moderators?

I've had both responses and debates pulled for using the word "idiot", and don't understand it. Should I use "stupid person" or "fool" instead? Frankly, this censorship seems idiotic. Why is "idiot" considered an offensive term by Blurtit moderators?

I use to tease my best friend with this word because his name was part of it...he knew i was kidding though so he did not take offense...i guess it has to do with how you use the word idi ette/or etiquette for using the word i-d-i-o-t....: )

I have no idea. You how personal people can get over politics. I'm sure it is very possible. I luv blurtit, but they can be extreme with their censorship. I would love to find an adult version of the same site. That would be awesome!

Simply because it is a BLATANT INSULT.

WE all know for a fact that when you describe somebody as an idiot that you're doing so to identify a negative aspect of their personality.

Just try to open your mind and think "What if it was me who has been called an idiot?" Will you be happy about it or not?

The way I see it, Blurtit moderators don't allow such words which can be considered offensive or discriminatory. Keep in mind that this site is for all nationalities, and you never know who can be offended or insulted by your usage of words.

What may be nothing to you may mean something to other Blurtit users.

And I am offended by such a lack of emotional maturity. Granted if I wanted to offend I would aim deliberately, but if you are offended by comments made about something not directly affecting you, well grow up.

Ironically, it my Pilipina wife who first said "Joe Biden is an idiot" when she saw that clip. The word has been part of English for several hundred years now, and is a simple descriptor for many. In the case of politicians, however, criticism with any word is fair and expected.

I think that the reason "idiot" is considered offensive to Blurtit Moderators is because it means a person lacking professional skill, a person so mentally deficient as to be incapable of ordinary reasoning~~~bad judgement so why would Blurtit want something so offensive said.

Now B, you know we aren't allowed to use words that might hurt someone's feelings!  Of course, that doesn't mean those same people aren't allowed to hurt Christian's feelings!  But, uhm, one thing- they let you use "idiot and idiotic" in the question?   I can't give you a reason, or a substitute for that word.  Maybe just "dum-dum?"

I suppose they see it as being offensive and derogatory. Some people may be easily offended if it is directed at them or used in a way that is intended to be offensive.   I understand their underlying intentions but its impossible to effectively police this type of free exchange of ideals without overdoing it with censorship. I think its best to leave it to those involved to take responsibility themselves.  If i find someone is causing me offense i will simply not answer or debate with them in future and remove them from my  friends list. :)

Those are all good. I think the problem here is that some folks across the pond take offense to some words more than others. Blurtit is a global website, so we need to adapt to diversity in the English language.

The moderators are very rigid and humorless dolts.  I am all for correct and proper English but the object of communication is to make a point which sometimes requires some spice to be added to your language or a resort to local slang.  You would think that the "idiots" at Blurit would understand this.  They censored me for saying the gentleman's magazine Play Boy in a context where I was opposing the objectifying of women.

Hi, Kkkkatie, sorry about it. I have removed 'play boy' from our bad word list. As you know, we have kids on the site, so we are trying to be protective and strict. Therefore, we have a really long list for the words that we don't allow. We are reviewing it now, so if you feel something should not be banned, please let me know, thanks.

I highly doubt Blurtit is "taking sides." "Idiot," "stupid person," and "fool" are insulting terms that should not be used on a site like this where there are children. Can you not come up with a better term to express your feelings about him? If possible--which it is--do not resort to any type of offensive language while contributing to this site.

I don't see why this is such a big deal. Blurtit did not approve of the term "idiot," so in this case, on this site, we should respect that and use a different, less offensive, term. And those words are offensive. Do you enjoy being called an idiot?

In this ultra-sensitive, liberal, socialist world we live in, thanks mostly to the clinton co-presidency, political correctness has ruined our sense of norm. You now have to cater to the weak minded and nurture them. Saying only positive reinforced things. Desensitivety training is a cornerstone to the messiahs coming.
I say if someone is gonna boohoo about being called out, so be it. But not to fret o sensitive one's,.....your socialist, commie dictator will soon arrive. God i pray not.
If you come up with an alternative, we could all have a chuckle about it.haha
